My So-Called Life

By | December 15, 2012

When I was a teenager, there was a remarkable show on TV called “My So-Called Life” which seemed to be the voice of my generation. It continually baffled us each week when we heard our own thoughts and experiences come out of the mouths of characters Angela, Rayanne, Rickie, Sharon, Bryan and even sometimes Jordan. (Sigh it with me, friends: “Ah, Jordan Catalano.”)

The show was not to be, however, as it was cancelled after one short season just when things were heating up. Perhaps it’s for the best, as the characters are all frozen in time and we’re left to wonder: Will Graham leave Patty? Will Angela forgive Rayanne?

Despite having the series on both VHS and DVD, I really love watching it live, on real tv. This is why Sundance Film Channel makes my heart happy every weekend morning – they air back to back episodes every Saturday and Sunday. Gotta love it!

In honor of the top television show of my teenage years, I bring you many, many quotes paired with some lovely images. Beware, some of the quotes are Just. So. Deep.

“Things were getting to me. Just how people are. How they always expect you to be a certain way, even your best friend.” – Angela

“It’s truly amazing. I have the power to be invisible.” – Danielle

“It just seems like, you agree to have a certain personality or something. For no reason. Just to make things easier for everyone. But when you think about it, I mean, how do you know it’s even you?” – Angela

“What I, like, dread is when people who know you in completely different ways end up in the same area. You have to develop this, like, combination you on the spot.” – Angela

“I guess I’m just sort of in the mood to have a crush on somebody where, it can’t hurt too much.” – Delia

“Huge events take place on this earth every day: earthquakes, hurricanes, even glaciers move. So, why couldn’t he just look at me?” – Angela

“He was a genius. I had goosebumps, just watching him think.”
– Danielle

“Mom, I’m not having sex, all right? Really! I’m not even close. To an embarrassing degree.” – Angela

“It’s amazing the things you notice. Like the corner of his collar that was coming undone, like he was from a poor family and couldn’t afford new shirts. That’s all I could see. The whole world was that unraveled piece of fabric. It’s such a lie that you should do what’s in your heart. If we all did what was in our hearts, the world would come to a halt.” – Angela

“I’m just really, like, low. I’ll just find any excuse to touch him.” – Angela

“It’s just weird, you know, when you have a picture of how something’s gonna be and it turns out completely different.” – Rickie

“Love is when you look into someone’s eyes and suddenly you go all the way inside, to their soul, and you both know instantly. I always imagined I’d fall in love nursing a blind soldier who was wounded in battle. Or maybe while rescuing someone in the middle of a blizzard, seconds before the avalanche hits. I thought at least by the age of 15 I’d have a love life, but I don’t even have a LIKE life.”  – Angela

“Sometimes it seems like we’re all living in some kind of prison, and the crime is how much we all hate ourselves. It’s good to get really dressed up once in a while and admit the truth — that when you really look closely, people are so strange and so complicated that they’re actually beautiful. Possibly even me.” – Angela

“There are so many different ways to be connected to people. There are the people you feel this unspoken connection to, even though there’s not even a word for it. There’s the people who you’ve known forever who know you in this way that other people can’t because they’ve seen you change. They’ve LET you change.” – Angela

And of course, the best moment of the show:

This is awesome! I have the sundance channel temporarily and this is my favorite reason! However, I feel you forgot my favorite “quote” or shall I say segment from the series. Jordan’s letter….I still love it to this day!!

“I know in the past I’ve caused you pain and I’m sorry. And I’ll always be sorry ’till the day I die. And I hate this pen I’m holding because I should be holding you. I hate this paper under my hand because it isn’t you. I even hate this letter because it’s not the whole truth. Because the whole truth is so much more than a letter can even say. If you want to hate me, go ahead. If you want to burn this letter, do it. You could burn the whole world down; you could tell me to go to hell. I’d go, if you wanted me to. And I’d send you a letter from there.
Sincerely,
Jordan Catalano”
