On a roll

I’m fortunate to be in a space that allows me to have an entire room devoted to my creative endeavors and this past week I’ve made a concerted effort to make at least one thing each day. Here’s my progress, using my personal challenge of scrapping with my stash in the process:

I loved the red color of my Target photo envelope so I punched some clouds from it, used a piece of a Starbucks bag (leftover from my daily album) and cut some strips from a Sassafras Lass 6×6 paper pad. I feel like there should be some sort of embellishment to the left of “museum” above the journaling because the writing is formatted oddly, but on the whole I like this page. Fun times! I LOVE those tomato red thickers!

As part of my personal challenge, I blindly grabbed this red chevron paper from October Afternoon and I loved it so much, I didn’t want to use it. I decided to use it very sparingly, and grabbed a piece of kraft as my base instead. I printed the photo on the left from my computer just with my laser printer- I hope it lasts. The black pennant to the right of the instax mini is propped up with foam squares. It then lifts the top of the photo a bit.

This last one was for a challenge on Two Peas using the new Dear Lizzy line. I’m not one for pastel, so I decided to take the challenge and in the process, purchased a bunch of her new line. I had this photo of me and my aunt that was just waiting to be scrapped, so I just started taking some elements from her line and adding them to the page. I loved the look of the vellum butterflies and the ease of punching them I experienced. I actually wound up making 30 or so butterflies that shall soon be incorporated into another project. Woot.

I’m really digging getting into the crafting groove. The other day at work I was stricken with all of this inspiration and couldn’t wait for the clock to strike 5 so I could run home and CREATE. That truly is one of the best feelings in the world. So much fun to be had!

In other news, I’m working on some fun things for the shop. I’ve been hoarding -er, gathering, Halloween papers and stamps for a couple of fun fall projects I have in mind. I had a hard time finding papers in the design style I had in mind, so I’ve taken to creating some various designs myself. There’s a purple layered paper that I’m particularly excited about, which will be used in the mini book I’m putting together. Hopefully the kits will be something that interests others. Stay tuned for more!

Big Bear daybook

If you’re anything like me, you’re glued to the computer screen for the first hour of your weekdays because you’re catching up on all of your favorite blogs. One of mine happens to be the American Crafts Studio Blog which featured a challenge last week along with a sneak peek at the newest Amy Tangerine products to be released in the future.

Update: here’s the link to the entries. Happy voting!

Since I was heading to Big Bear for the second time, I knew it would be a great opportunity for a nice mini. I didn’t have time to get a daybook, though, so I opted to make my own. Here are some of the pages and the cover– I think Amy would approve (I hope?)

Check out the entries at The AC facebook page and vote for your favorite!

What to do with those Hambly overlays pt 2

You may remember my previous post about Hambly overlays and my not-so-secret addiction to them. I’m now here to offer another suggestion for using them.

This time I used the chicken coop overlay in silver, which is one of my top picks when it comes to the Hambly lines. It all happened a bit by accident. I had relocated my stash to the living room during the NLCS and subsequent race to the pennant, so I was limited in my routine– this resulted in some unintentional castoff when I used my sprays. Since the page was already dirtied, I used it as a backdrop to catch any other messes from pages I was working on.

So when I put my overlay on top of the black paper with castoff spray drips, I was surprised but thrilled to see a lovely little complementary pattern underneath.

I went to work finishing my layout, which included several Hambly rub ons, a robot cut out from my favorite Bam Pop! page, an epoxy circle sticker and a doily scrap in the upper corner to hide a blemish in the paper. I added my Instax Mini image and yellow Thickers and walah– dunzo.

I used some teeny glue dots on the four corners of the page to adhere it to the black paper.

There’s your tip for adding some pizzazz to your overlays. Have fun!

Make it Monday

I’m back with another alliteration: this time to help you make some cool embellies and frames. Polaroids, Instax and other instant film cameras are all the rage right now, so I’ve created a little set of graphics to help you polarize your pages.

UPDATE: I realized after publishing this post that the document appears horizontally and might not print correctly. Therefore, I’ve created a vertical/portrait version of the doc, as well. DOWNLOAD IT HERE

Click the preview image above to download the pdf, print, cut and enjoy! I hope you like my little mouse friend Eddie over on the bottom right- he’s very dear to my heart.

If you like this, hold onto your hats because there are a TON more in store for 2012!

Happy Monday and happy making! I can’t wait to see what you do with this. :)

LHR-DUB 2011 part 1

Many months ago, our friends Reel Big Fish announced that they would once again be playing Slam Dunk Festival in England. Having seen them all across North America many times these past 14 years, I couldn’t help but think it might be fun to see them across the pond, as well. Thankfully my good buddy DJ Wanda thought the same thing- and plans were made for a most epic vacation.

In preparing for our trip, I tried to plan out what scrapping materials I should bring. After all, one of the highlights of traveling is to make your travel album while on the road. For weeks I went through my stash, agonizing over what I could leave behind and what would survive the journey. I didn’t want to be completely weighed down by my stuff, but I wanted to have enough materials and variety to make something amazing.

The next step was to determine what size to make my book. I knew I wanted something big enough to hold more than one photo on a page, but something portable. I soon settled on a size and began trimming papers to scale.

However, as the days went on and I saw the stash just waiting to be made, I couldn’t help but start my album. Now, I would normally advise against this method, since you never quite know what you’ll experience… but this time it just made sense. Making the book helped me keep my excitement in check, and it was an interesting challenge to always keep in mind the fact that I had no idea if this would suit my needs- it left room for many blank pages and opportunities for journaling/additional embellishment.

The book wound up being a very welcome travel companion as it made me more conscious of gathering keepsakes and journaling as we went along. It was so much fun to put together!

So without further adieu, I bring you some of the first pages. Please keep in mind that this is a very, VERY thick book- I just kept adding to it and I couldn’t be happier about its bulk- but it has set peoples’ eyes a-widenin’ a time or two. There are also a lot of hidden journaling areas/pockets. Enjoy!

Album cover – lots of scraps used on this one.
I took a paper that I wasn’t really sure about and sprinkled it with white & yellow mist. Once I added the yellow houndstooth & tape details, it wasn’t so bad. I struggled with the journaling, though- I wish I had thought a bit more about the words before I started writing. Gotta love the Instax mini, though! And I love the look of the Hambly overlay behind the American Crafts cloud- definitely a good combo for future projects!

When we landed at London Heathrow, we were given these landing cards to hand to the border agent. I thought it would make a lovely insert, so I grabbed an extra. Yes, I spray-painted my suitcase. I wanted to make sure that it didn’t look appealing to steal, as well as ensure that if someone did try to take it they would stand out like no other!

I loved the color/design of the barf bag, so I swiped it. I added the scraps of a doily and another scalloped paper as well as a little washi tape and we were all set. There are some other keepsakes inside the bag – things I wanted to keep but didn’t feel the need to include in the design.

This is the other side of the barf bag. I don’t like it as much as some of the other pages, but it was a quick way to add photos of our room and the ephemera that we got when we checked in.

I wanted to make sure I left room for journaling the first day, so I included this lined kraft paper and left a lot of space in the middle for my account of the day. Washi tape provided some really great decorative details without being too overbearing. I had drawn a little box at the top right to remember to leave room for a photo, and added it after we got back to the states.

Come back soon for the next 5-6 pages, or you can sneak a peek in my photo gallery for the images without any explanations. Cheers!
